There are plants that come and go. Trends that shape the market for a few years and then fade away. And then there is the geranium (Pelargonium) – a plant that has endured. Across generations. On balconies, at farmhouses, in towns and villages alike.

The geranium is more than just a balcony plant. It is a piece of Bavarian horticultural culture – robust, resilient, and full of flowering vitality.

For us as a nursery, it is not merely a classic; it is quite clearly one of our personal favourites, which we cultivate with genuine passion in a wide range of varieties and colours.

Why is the geranium the perfect plant for Bavaria? Geraniums are among the most efficient and reliable balcony plants in ornamental horticulture. Particularly in times of climate change, heat, and prolonged dry periods, their strengths become evident.

Key characteristics

  • exceptionally heat tolerant

  • highly drought resistant

  • prolific flowering from April to November

  • capable of recovering after stress periods

  • robust against wind and intense sunlight

Geraniums originate from South Africa and are therefore naturally adapted to sunny, dry conditions. This makes them ideally suited to modern balconies.

From a horticultural perspective, they are among the most efficient summer flowering plants in the balcony plant segment.

Months of continuous flowering

Few plants offer such a long and reliable flowering period as the geranium.

From the first warm days of spring well into autumn, they provide continuous colour:

  • Start: April / May

  • Peak: summer months

  • End: often not until October or even November

They form dense cushions of flowers that can completely cover a balcony.

This continuous flowering performance is a key reason for their popularity in professional ornamental horticulture.

The geranium at the Bavarian farmhouse

The history of the geranium is closely linked to Bavaria.

For decades – indeed, for generations – it has been the quintessential balcony plant at the traditional farmhouse. Red, abundantly flowering geranium boxes remain a defining feature of many villages in the Alpine foothills.

They have long symbolised:

  • prosperity and care

  • traditional horticultural craftsmanship

  • regional identity

The geranium has never been mere decoration; it has always expressed attentiveness and pride in one’s home.

And it continues to convey exactly that feeling today.

Location and care – simple and efficient

The geranium is a plant that gives a great deal while requiring surprisingly little.

Location

  • full sun to sunny positions

  • ideal for south- and west-facing balconies

  • tolerant of wind

Watering

  • moderate, but thorough rather than frequent

  • short dry periods are well tolerated

Fertilising

  • regular liquid fertiliser (once per week)

  • alternatively slow-release fertiliser

Maintenance

  • occasional removal of spent flowers (depending on variety)

  • otherwise very low maintenance

Compared to more delicate balcony plants, geraniums are exceptionally user-friendly.

Upright or trailing – choosing the right type

Geraniums are available in different growth forms, each offering distinct design possibilities.

Upright geraniums (Pelargonium zonale)

  • compact growth

  • ideal for containers and window boxes

  • structured, defined appearance

Trailing geraniums (Pelargonium peltatum)

  • cascading, overhanging growth

  • perfect for balcony boxes

  • particularly lush visual effect

A combination of both types creates maximum impact.

Plant combinations – enhancing the effect

Geraniums combine exceptionally well with other plants, creating diverse and contemporary planting schemes.

Particularly effective combinations include:

  • incense plant (Plectranthus) – adds structure and fragrance, creating contrast

  • petunia / surfinia – enhances floral abundance and colour variation

  • Lobelia richardii – introduces a fine, airy texture as a counterbalance

These combinations create:

  • greater visual depth

  • extended flowering periods

  • more dynamic planting compositions

Sustainability and future relevance

Even within the context of modern horticulture, the geranium remains highly relevant.

It aligns perfectly with current trends such as:

  • water-efficient gardening

  • low-maintenance planting

  • climate-resilient plant selection

It is therefore not only part of tradition, but also of the future.

Our passion for geraniums

In our nursery, we cultivate geraniums in many forms – from classic red varieties to modern colours and growth types.

For us, the geranium represents:

  • a symbol of horticulture

  • a product with tradition

  • a plant with a future

Above all, it is a plant we grow with genuine dedication and care.

The geranium is not a trend – it is a foundation.

It combines:

  • flowering performance

  • modern requirements

And that is precisely why, even in 2026, it remains the finest balcony plant for Bavaria.
